Our History

Our Farm-to-Table Philosophy

Our Farm-to-Table Philosophy

In the spring of 2020, recognizing an opportunity in the growing demand for sustainable, locally-sourced food, we made the decision to launch our quail farm in rural Canada. With the increasing popularity of alternative protein sources and the rising interest in small-scale farming, we saw quail as an ideal choice. Quail farming offered efficient production, a high-quality product, and a relatively small operational footprint compared to larger livestock.

Starting with a modest flock of Coturnix quail, known for their rapid growth and prolific egg-laying, we invested in the infrastructure needed to ensure optimal conditions for our birds. This included temperature-controlled coops, high-quality feed, and an efficient incubation system. Our goal from the beginning was to establish a farm that could reliably produce both quail eggs and meat for a growing consumer base, focusing on quality and sustainability.

By mid-2020, we began selling quail eggs at local farmers’ markets and to specialty grocery stores. The response was overwhelmingly positive, particularly from chefs at high-end restaurants looking for gourmet ingredients, and health-conscious consumers who appreciated the nutrient-dense, low-calorie protein quail eggs provide. Through direct marketing efforts and strategic use of social media, we quickly built a loyal customer base.

Recognizing the potential for expansion, we scaled up our operations in 2021, increasing our flock size and diversifying our product line. In addition to fresh quail eggs and meat, we began offering hatching eggs, enabling other farmers and hobbyists to raise their own quail. We also capitalized on the growing trend of sustainable agriculture by offering quail manure for gardeners and organic feed options for our birds.

Despite supply chain disruptions and market challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, we remained agile. We navigated delays in acquiring essential equipment and developed educational content to help our customers understand the unique benefits of quail products. Our free online course, Hatching 101, provided new customers with the knowledge needed to successfully hatch quail, further positioning us as experts in the field.

By 2023, our quail farm had firmly established itself as a key player in the local market. We were not only supplying restaurants and consumers with premium quail products but also expanding into new distribution channels, including online sales and subscription-based deliveries. Our focus on sustainability and ethical farming practices has become a core part of our brand, helping us build long-term relationships with both individual customers and commercial clients.

Looking ahead, we continue to explore opportunities for growth, including expanding our product offerings, enhancing our digital presence, and exploring export markets. Our farm, launched during a period of uncertainty, has grown into a thriving business by adapting to market demands, focusing on quality, and staying true to our values of sustainability and community engagement. The future looks promising as we continue to innovate and scale in this rapidly evolving agricultural landscape.

Raising Quail

Quail are relatively easy to raise, especially for small-scale farmers or hobbyists. They require minimal space, grow quickly, and are productive layers.

  • Housing: Quail need a secure enclosure to protect them from predators and weather. They can be raised in cages or aviaries, depending on the scale of production.
  • Feeding: Quail thrive on a diet of high-protein feed, typically 20-24% protein to support egg production and healthy growth. Commercial quail feed is available, or chicken feed can be supplemented with extra protein.
  • Care: Quail require fresh water, proper ventilation, and regular cleaning of their living space to avoid disease.

Quail Farming Benefits

  • High Productivity: Quail start laying eggs at a young age and can produce up to 300 eggs per year.
  • Low Maintenance: Quail are small birds and don't require as much space or care as chickens, making them ideal for small-scale farming.
  • Quick Turnaround: Quail grow and mature quickly, making them an efficient option for both meat and egg production.

Quail for Pets or Ornamental Use

Quail can also be kept as pets or for ornamental purposes, especially smaller species like Button Quail. They are low-maintenance and interesting birds to watch. Some people also raise quail for their beautiful feathers, which are used in crafts and decorations.

Conservation and Hunting

Certain species of quail, such as the Bobwhite Quail, are also raised for conservation and hunting purposes. Many game reserves and hunting enthusiasts raise quail for release into the wild, helping to maintain populations and offer hunting opportunities.

Conclusion

Whether you’re interested in quail for their eggs, meat, or simply as a hobby, these small birds offer a range of benefits for farmers, food enthusiasts, and bird lovers. With minimal space and care, quail can be a rewarding addition to any homestead or garden. If you're considering raising quail, they are an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced farmers alike.
